Paint-by-Number: The De-Stressor You Never Knew You Needed
Let me tell you, I’m an emotional wreck. I stress myself out with work, perfection, and school on a daily basis.
Since the pandemic hit, I’ve gotten into a new hobby: paint-by-number. As soon as I started my first project, I knew this was going to help my mental health significantly.
I’m a big supporter of this hobby. Maybe, it’s even the right one for you.
Let me give you a few reasons why you should pick up that paintbrush and enter the world of paint-by-numbers.
It helped me forget about my stress, even if it was just for a little bit.
My days are chaotic. I write for my blog, take 16 hours of classes, and work a job I love on campus. By the time I’m finished with the day, I’m completely drained. Paint-by-numbers help me relax, forget about my mind-boggling routine, and focus on the now.
You can pick whatever image you want.
There are so many paint by numbers to choose from. Some websites even let you upload your own pictures! For example, after I finish painting the beautiful scenery of Banff, Canada, I’m debating on getting one made of my hamster.
Note: There are some paint-by-numbers that require you to mix colors and others that don’t. Make sure you look up the difficulty before you purchase.
It passes the time.
I’m a night owl to the point where it’s a problem. Sometimes I’ll start working on my project at 9:30 at night and not stop until 1:30 in the morning. Did it feel like I painted for that long? Absolutely not. I just slapped on some music and started creating.
When it’s done, you’ll feel accomplished.
The first paint-by-number I finished made me feel like a true Picasso. It was a sunset lighthouse, and it was beautiful. After, I immediately moved on to my next project.

As soon as I finished that lighthouse, I gave it to my mom. She knew how much work I put into that painting, and she absolutely loved it. This could be where getting your own image on a paint by number might come in. You could paint a picture of you and the person or a favorite hometown spot of theirs!
I could keep going on as to why paint by number is a perfect creative outlet for anyone. They’re insanely easy to do, comforting, and a perfect time-waster. It’s an excellent way to keep your creative juices flowing. Work stressing you out? Paint. Needing a break from your computer? Paint. Want to just escape for a little bit? Paint. If you’re ever in doubt, just paint.
