Hometown Happiness: The Positives of Coming Back Home
I don’t know about ya’ll, but I’m always anxious at the thought of going home. When I say home, I mean your old stomping ground.
Yes, it’s nice to go back for a weekend and see old friends and family, but I also remember everything that’s happened. Heartbreak and life lessons could be found on any corner, and it took me a long time to come to terms with it.
I still struggle to put the past behind me, but I’m getting better. If you’re in the same boat, here are a few reasons why it’s good to go back to your hometown.
You truly see how much you’ve grown.
In high school, I was a completely different person. I didn’t understand the world or how to navigate relationships and big life changes. I was scared and acted on my emotions.
With that being said, there are definitely a few situations and interactions I regret. But hey, that shows growth! Looking back at the past sucks if you use the wrong perspective. Lots of shame, sadness and anger may come. Instead, remember your past self didn’t know what you know now. Give yourself some slack.
You’re reminded of good memories.
If you don’t want to look at your mistakes, remember the good times you had. For example, my friend group did trivia nights weekly, and I wouldn’t trade that for the world. Every time I walked into the Mexican restaurant on a Thursday night, I knew it was going to be a good time.
Meet up with old friends.
This is probably my favorite thing to do whenever I’m back home. While I might still talk to my hometown friends on a daily basis, it’s nothing like meeting up for coffee. I know I need that in-person communication to strengthen my friendships.
This is also perfect if you ever need advice. Meeting up with people who’ve known you since you were 10 can really give you perspective. They’ve seen you grow and have your best interests in heart.
Let’s not forget about favorite restaurants.
For my Huntsville people, I have two words for you: Little Rosies. The second I’m back in town, that is the first place I go. No, like literally, I immediately go through the drive thru. You really can’t beat it.
While going home after a long semester of college may be hard, you have to remember the silver lining. Make the most out of it whether it’s for a weekend or a whole month. Before you know it, you’ll be working your dream job across the country and lose the opportunity for a quick, hometown visit.
Sincerely, Abbey
