Becoming a Coffee Shop Regular

Imagine: you walk into your favorite coffee shop and every barista knows your name, life story, and order by name.

As you order, the owner comes out: “I knew it was you! I could tell it was your voice from miles away.” Funny thing is… this is my reality.

Now, how does one BECOME a coffee shop regular? With hard work, charisma, and determination, it’s possible. From one regular to you, here are a few tips to really stand out amongst the coffee lovers.

Don’t be scared of conversation!

Many baristas love a little chit chat. If he or she invites conversation, go with the flow! You may make a new friend; I know I have.

Try to come in on a somewhat regular schedule in the beginning.

Starting out, I came in around the same time a few times a week. After about a month or so, everyone knew me! The more conversations and interactions you have, the more you stick out. It’s truly worth it.

Be yourself!

This may sound like a stupid point for a first date, but it’s still true! If you really want a good relationship with a coffee shop’s staff, don’t fake who you are.

Keep building relationships with both older and newer baristas.

This is totally worth it. Really getting to know the staff is always a fun time, and you’ll find out that you may have similar interests! Here’s a funny story for you: A few weeks ago, I pull into my coffee shop. I haven’t walked in or anything yet; I was just getting my things together. By the time I walked through the door, my drink was already made! I look at my barista and he says, “Oh I saw you pull in, and I just got it ready anyway.” It was super funny and something we joke about to this day.

Being a regular at your local coffee shop is truly a flex worth having. Not only do you have a regular study spot, you also have a community! I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Sincerely, Abbey
