The Good in Goodbyes

High school Abbey right before she went off to Auburn

Change: the most terrifyingly beautiful thing in life.

A blank slate with new opportunities. What will you do with it?

I spent all of my teenage years mentally battling even the smallest of changes; now, I welcome the unknown with open arms. This didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it took many sleepless nights, tears, and anxiety attacks.

Are you on the brink of a huge life transformation? I’m here to let you know it will be OK, and your feelings are valid. From one anxious planner to you, I’m here to tell you there is good in the goodbyes.

Most of the time, you discover more about yourself through the unknown.

Self-realization is the key for growth. When I graduated high school, the thought of moving terrified me. All of my friends, favorite places and comforts were in Huntsville. It took me months to accept the fact that it wasn’t my home anymore.

Now, I can honestly say Auburn has impacted me in the most positive ways imaginable. From friends and life goals to political beliefs, I can confidently say I know and love who I am. Without my freshman year experiences, I probably wouldn’t even be a journalism major, and if I wasn’t a writer, this blog wouldn’t exist. How crazy is that?

Opportunities provide learning.

Not only will you learn about yourself, you’ll learn about the world around you. Whether it’s a new friendship, job, or school, the experiences give you a new perspective on life. Keep reaching for new adventures and grow your knowledge of the world; I can guarantee you won’t regret it.

Letting go of control gives you a new appreciation for spontaneity.

If you’ve been reading my stuff for a while, you already know I struggle to surrender to the unplanned. This battle has been ongoing since I was a child. Structure is all I knew: school first, volleyball later. I was always doing something, and the thought of going with the impromptu was incredibly stressful.

As a junior in college, I can finally tell you I’m all for spontaneous adventures. While I do like a set schedule for the most part, I can appreciate the free-spirited plans that come my way. These experiences are almost always the most memorable, and let me tell you, I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Now this may only be three reasons, but they all heavily impact your life. Take time to step back and look at the big picture; your future self will thank you. Keep dreaming and be open to the goodbyes; you never know where the newest adventure will take you. I’m cheering you on.

Sincerely, Abbey
