Senior Year, I’m Coming For You
It’s weird to think that I’m almost 22 and on my way to start my career.
I don’t know about you, but I still feel like I’m 18.
This summer has truly opened my eyes and showed me passions I never knew I had. (Hey, Opelika Observer, I’m talking about you!) With senior year knocking on my door, I can’t help but wonder: am I actually ready for this?
Honestly, I feel like no college senior is ready to say goodbye to their schooling days. It’s all we’ve known for most of our lives. So, the thought of doing work NOT for a grade is just weird. I know I’ve been doing my internship, but this just felt temporary—even though I know it’s not.
The funniest thing to me is that before this summer, I only saw myself working for a magazine. Well, if you’ve kept up with my Facebook, you know that’s obviously not the case anymore. All I needed was the right people to show me the good sides of print journalism.
I’m a pretty confident person when it comes to my work, but I was never confident with news, especially if it’s a story I have to whip out in an hour. Through the amazing encouragement from one of my favorite mentors (shoutout to my gal, Hannah Lester), I realized I shouldn’t diminish my abilities.
This summer was challenging and pushed me to my limits, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Photography plays such an important part in my life and being able to showcase it is all I ever wanted.
It may be long hours, but it doesn’t feel like work. Instead, it feels like a hobby.
So, long story short: senior year, I’m ready. I’m not scared to graduate and now know what I want to do. It just took one internship to convince me.
Sincerely, Abbey
