Comfort in the Sadness

Sadness: a numb, yet somehow relaxing feeling.

I don’t know how to describe it; there’s a comforting peace in the depression.

Although many people don’t give this feeling enough credit, I somehow see beauty in the heartache. I’ve been battling with sadness ever since I was in middle school, and it’s just become a piece of my puzzle at this point.

It can be a horrible experience, but through it, you gain so much perspective and self-growth. Think of it as a rainstorm. When it’s pouring, everything is dark, dreary, and depressing. You feel isolated, maybe even disconnected from the world.

Once the rain stops, you walk outside. What do you see? You may notice a full rainbow up in the sky, birds chirping, and the detailed raindrops magnifying every leaf’s veins. If you’re lucky, the humid air dissipates and you’re left with a cool, welcoming temperature.

To get the beauty, you had to wait out the severe weather. Life lessons and growth you experience happen after your hardest moments. Within your personal whirlwind, you have to realize that you will see the rainbow. Will you see the beauty today? Maybe. Maybe not. Just like unexpected downpours, no one knows how long your hardships will last.

With years of practice, my brain seems to understand that there’s something to search for in the monsoon. Desolation is the key to finding your innermost thoughts; ignoring rain won’t make it go away.

If you don’t handle the rain, your emotions could turn into a hurricane: unpredictable, dangerous, and catastrophic. Take your time in the storms, they will make you stronger. Most importantly, don’t forget to find the beauty in your sadness.

Sincerely, Abbey
